Indeed, in French, the comparison with plus, moins, aussi and autant is widely used. At the beginner level, this is one of the first things to learn and master. The video below will teach you how to use the comparison with plus, moins, aussi and autant in French:
In French, to compare with an adjective, we use “plus + adjective + que = more + adjective + than”, “moins + adjective + que = less + adjective + than” and “aussi + adjective + que = as + adjective + as”. For a complete sentence: subject + verb + plus or moins or aussi + adjective + que + complement. Examples:
- Je suis plus petit que mon frère. = I am smaller (shorter) than my brother.
- Je suis moins jolie que ma sœur. = I am less pretty than my sister.
- Je suis aussi grand que mon père. = I am as tall as my father.
To compare with a noun (nom), we use:
- “plus + de + nom + que + de + nom”. Example Il y a plus de garçons que de filles. = There are more boys than girls.
- “moins + de + nom + que + de + nom”. Example: Il y a moins de garçons que de filles. = There are fewer boys than girls.
- “autant + de + nom + que + de + nom”. Example: Il y a autant de garçons que de filles. = There are as many boys as there are girls.
