Lesson 10 of French: talk about your tastes
French communication lesson 10: talk about your tastes in French
At the beginner level (level A1), knowing how to talk about your tastes in French is one of the first things to learn. This will be useful to you in a basic conversation with a French speaker. At DELF A1 and DELF A2, you must be able to talk about your tastes. To a lesser extent, this will also be useful for the DELF B1, especially for the first part (the guided conversation) of the speaking test in which you must present yourself. The video below will teach you how to talk about your tastes in French. To understand and speak well, watch the video several times, repeating aloud after the teacher.
Thanks to this video and this article, you will be able to talk about your tastes simply in French (beginner level, level A1). Here you will learn how to talk about your tastes using three verbs: aimer (here it means to like), adorer (here it means to love) and détester = to hate.
When you like something, you can say: “J’aime (...).”. For example:
J’aime le chocolat. = I like chocolate.
J’aime bien lire des livres. = I like to read books.
J’aime beaucoup écouter de la musique. = I really enjoy listening to music.
When you don't like something, you can say: “Je n’aime pas (...).”. For example:
Je n’aime pas le chocolat. = I don’t like chocolate.
Je n’aime pas du tout regarder la télé. = I don't like watching TV at all.
When you like something very much, you can use the French verb "adorer" and you can say: "J’adore (...).". For example :
J’adore les animaux. = I love animals.
When you don't like something at all, you can use the French verb "détester" and you can say, "Je déteste (...)." For example :
Je déteste les serpents. = I hate snakes.
To summarize:
Positive | Negative |
---|---|
J'aime | Je n'aime pas |
J'aime bien | Je n'aime pas du tout |
J'aime beaucoup | Je n'aime pas du tout |
